Syrian government condemns Turkish 'invasion' of Idlib

Damascus has demanded the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops from Syrian soil in Idlib, calling the incursion an act of "blatant aggression" against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
"The Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms the invasion of Idlib by Turkish army units, which represents a blatant aggression towards the sovereignty and security of Syrian lands and a glaring violation of worldwide law", an official source at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said.
The official said that the Turkish operation wasn't discussed during the Astana talks and violates global law.
Ankara's latest move means an nearly full encirclement of Afrin which is surrounded from the west and north by the Turkish border and in the east with Turkey-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) groups. "This shows the close relationship between the Turkish regime and the terrorist groups that are destroying Syria, sheds the blood of the Syrian people and contributes to the destabilization of the situation in Syria", Sabbagh said.
Turkey's "aggression" does not fall within agreements reached during the Astana process, an official source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told state-run SANA news. The source called Turkey's Idlib operation a "blatant aggression against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and a flagrant violation of worldwide law and norms" and said it "has nothing to do" with the agreements reached during the latest round of the Syrian peace talks in Astana brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey.
Turkish troops entered Idlib on Thursday night as part of efforts to enforce a so-called "de-escalation zone" agreed by rebel backer Ankara and regime allies Russian Federation and Iran at talks in Astana earlier this year.
The Turkish army has started deploying troops and armored vehicles to Idlib on October 8 and begun setting up observation posts in the city on Friday, according to statements by the country's general staff.
Under the deal, rebel and government forces would halt hostilities in four agreed-upon areas, one of which is Idlib, for six months, and the Syrian government would allow unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
